I had been looking for quite some time to get ideas for a bookshelf to add to the den. I had an idea of what I wanted to build but wasn’t sure I could do it with the limited tools I had and really had no idea what materials I would need. I ran across Shara’s video in Woodshop Diaries where she built exactly what I was looking for. I watched the video several times and decided I could build one too. I saw that she had plans available the included a materials list and layout of how to cut the boards with as little waste as possible. I purchased the plans, bought the materials, and started construction on the project. The plans looked simple to follow and included visuals of cutouts and dimensions for each sheet of plywood. This was exactly what I needed for the job. She included the suggestion to only cut the parts as I needed them. That was very good advice since my room dimensions were different from the room in the video. I found that if I got stuck I could rewatch one of her videos and learn exactly what I needed to do to build it correctly. Every width and length had to be adjusted to fit my room but the calculations were simple to make. Some cut placements needed to be adjusted to fit the layout on the plywood sheets but I was easily able to make it work with very littel waste and no extra material needed. I only had to buy extra trim pieces because my shelving was a little taller than the one in the plans. I also decided to add a shelf at the top between the two uprights since it was built around a window. I was able to install the crown molding across the middle shelf to match the sides. I had the same outlet issue behind the bench and decided to relocate it a few inches higher so that it was still accessible. I appreciate the suggestion on keeping the crown molding slightly below the ceiling height because my ceiling was definitely not flat. Overall I’m very pleased with how the plans helped with the project and the final product.
These plans are very good and easy to follow . I haven’t got to build yet but should have no problem building.. Lots of additional info on building and what materials work best. My wife wants this very much so I get brownie points !
Planning to start this build in the new year after the holidays. The purchased plan was very detailed and provided me with a great foundation for customizing my build. I am working to customize my measurements and cuts from the plan to fit my space. I don't have as much wall or ceiling and I'm building this around a bay window that has different dimensions left and right of the window. But this plan made my design and planning 100% easier then starting this from scratch, which I was kind of struggling with analysis paralysis until I found the video on youtube and bought this plan. The video content that is available that accompanies this build and it's plans are also very helpful. I would say my skills are novice and I've become a homeowner carpenter by necessity as we've explored improving our home for storage. I do plan to keep following content and coming back for additional plans once this project is done.
Shara does a great job of building and explaining her builds for people that want to make nice furniture, but not have to be a professional to make it. Her prints are perfectly detailed for material lists and even how to cut out your pieces to maximize the use of materials.
Wow! The plans are meticulously executed and well thought out. Even as an avid viewer you exceeded my expectations. I just bought two more of your plans.
