Cabinet doors can be intimidating. How do you measure for them? How do you make them? Don't I need expensive tools for that? Maybe they're just not worth it.

If you've been avoiding adding adding doors into to your DIY cabinet and furniture projects because you're just not sure how to go about it, this guide is for you.

This beginners guide to cabinet doors walks you through the process of measuring for your cabinet door size, then provides 7 different methods to assemble a cabinet door.

These methods range from SUPER easy to intermediate and each one involves a different set of tools. That way, you can choose the style that best fits your project, your skill level, and the tools you have available. The minimum tools you need are a saw to cut plywood.

This door building guide includes 33 pages packed full of diagrams, examples, and details to walk you through sizing and building a cabinet door.

This guide does not include cabinet door installation, however you can find additional resources on that here:

Excellent Instructions

I just finished my first cabinet door using the Woodshop Diaries instructions. I like that there were pictures and easy to follow instructions. I did a 1/2" overlay door in the Shaker style (#4) using 1/4" plywood set in a 3/8" rabbet. Chiseling out the corners for the inset was tedious so I am going to buy a tongue and groove set of router bits and do plan #7. Getting the dowels set right was also tricky but with practice I think I can improve. I like that 7 different build styles are given so I can see which type works best for me. I wish there was more guidance on wood and finish selection. I used 1x2 select pine for the face frame, 1x3 common spruce for the door lattice and 1/4" sande plywood for the inset all from Home Depot. For my second attempt I plan to use select pine for the lattice and birch for the inset. The spruce wood is too soft and the sande plywood lacks character.

Hi! Thanks so much for your feedback! If you ever have a question regarding a plan or materials, please reach out via email. I'm here to help!

What material and finish you choose for your project really depends on the overall look you prefer, your budget and material availability in your area. That said, I share some tips for choosing the best material for your cabinet doors on page 14 based on whether you're planning to paint or stain.

Happy building!

I am a fan

Excellent outline for cabinet construction, and with this product, the Cabinet Door Guide. I could have used just your videos, but youd details, ingenuity, and excellent work demanded that I participate in promoting your work by buying your product showing the cabinet details (base, uppers, doors), which is a small price to pay for what you provided me. Where I live, the cabinet builders are ~$25k for kitchen cabinets+install, for something that is not custom, and is not even close to as nice as your designs, and the variability that they offer, where as you say, we're essentially talking wooden boxes (granted requiring plenty of labor) that maybe all in you're say ~$1000 - $1500. Well done !!! My house is a modern design., so I'm going like your garage kitchen and shop, but I'll do the HD Birch, stained with GF Cabernet. Thank you for everything you've done on this site, and kudos to your excellent work, I am impressed, you've given me exactly what I needed (and saved me a ton of money), and promise to share with all, and give you the credit you rightly deserve, I'm a fan. I'll send you pictures of the final product.
