Shara always creates detailed, step-by-step plans, including advice on the source materials and equipment necessary, a detailed cut-list, and numerous illustrations to guide the builder to successful completion of the project. This garage shelf with cabinet is no exception.
I have not yet built the shelf, but I have carefully read the instructions and begun clearing space to store the necessary lumber prior to building. I am not a complete novice and I feel quite confident that Shara's plans will make this a fairly easy project. I think even a complete novice would be able to successfully build this shelf/cabinet given her plans.
It's a great combination - a reasonably sized set of shelves with a fully enclosed cabinet forming the bottom. It's made from 2x4's, 2x2's, and one sheet each of 1/2" and 3/4" plywood. Depending primarily on your choice of plywood, the cost would be in the neighborhood of $120-200.
I do have reservations about the depth of the shelves and cabinet, 20" and 17" respectively. While the dimensions allow the storage of a wide variety of things, it also causes individual items to get lost if numerous, smaller things are stored - like cans of finish. On the other hand, a shallower depth would be more limiting on the types of items the unit could accommodate.
